Dress rehearsal for a solar show
Gardener is practicing taking photographs of the Sun. He is preparing for the Transit of Venus, a celestial event where the disk of Venus moves across the face of the sun appearing as a small black spot. Gardner says this is a rare event; the next time this will happen is 2117. He says it takes over six hours for the disk of Venus to move across the face of the sun so we will have plenty of time to take photographs from Space Station, something that can not be repeated by space crews for another 105 years. He has a special filter covering the front of a long telephoto lens so his eyes are protected. This is so strange; we stare directly at the Sun without the need for any filters.
